Frances Palmer
This post is for my mother. We both covet the handmade ceramic wares of Connecticut artist, Frances Palmer. We fantasized about using one of her cake pedestals at my wedding, but decided to go "the more sensible route" and use one of the dozen we had already purchased for the one cake. I was so excited to find out that she has developed a commercial line called "Frances Palmer Pearl Collection" made from molds of her original pottery. The prices are great and they are user friendly, but I'm afraid much of her magic has been lost in the translation. There are a few sweet pieces however, and they'll have to do until I can finally afford an original Palmer! Visit her website here.

Charmfoundry
Since I currently have no time for making my own artwork to share with you, for the next few weeks I'll be sharing some from other folks! Here are some beautiful images from "Charmfoundry" (love the name!) the Etsy site for Bay Area artist, Kate Phillips. I'm especially fond of her "waxy drawings" which she offers as prints at very affordable prices.

Veronique LaFont
Today I stumbled upon the magical French artist, Veronique LaFont. I am in love with her series of paintings about dolls. They remind me so much of Denise Falk's paintings (which I'm trying to find some images to show you). She has a great website that shows examples of all the different mediums she works with- from handmade dolls, small works on paper and mixed media to large abstract canvases. She has a blog too! Wish I could read French! Oh well, the images are lovely enough to speak for themselves.

Dorothy Draper Auction
Oh my goodness! I just found out about this auction of Dorothy Draper furniture via BeachBungalow8! If only I had a trailer, pockets of cash and didn't have a wedding in two weeks- well, I'd be there!! Most of these items are from rooms at the famous Greenbriar Hotel that Draper decorated in the late forties. My future-in-laws stayed there last summer and could not believe how perfectly fabulous it all was! I love all the styles and colors she mixes together. There seems to be something in this collection for everyone. The furniture ranges from Danish Modern to French Provencial, Shabby Chic to Chinese Antiques.

Denise Falk "Songs of the South"
If you are in the Atlanta area treat yourself to Denise Falk's new show "Songs of the South" at SCAD's Trois Gallery. It's open now until Nov. 6th. Denise has been like a mentor to me and I am curious to see this new body of work as it seems much different from anything I've seen from her before. She's created new narrative works using classic childhood stories and imagery from stories like "Bambi" and "The Wizard of Oz". Knowing Denise, it won't simply be daisies and teacups. I'm afraid I don't have images from the show to share- but above I've listed some that are currently available at shopSCAD.I'm hoping to make it to the opening Oct. 19th!
See more of Denise Falk's work here: Artlink@Sotheby's.For some reason SCAD doesn't have any of her work available to view on their entire site! What a Shame! No shopSCADonline link Either! A Crying Shame!

Vintage Terrors
I don't usually decorate for Halloween but today there is finally a hint of fall in the air and it got me thinking...
Madame Talbot's Victorian Lowbrow has some fascinating oddities in the vintage section. The best items are usually sold, but its worth a look. You never know when you might need a spare coffin handle or arsenic mug.
And who can resist witnessing a medical anomolie? The College of Physicians of Philadelphia's, Mutter Museum caters to this macabre fascination. I'd love to see their collection of 2,000 things extracted from people's throats and the various preserved anatomical specimens. Fabulous! Which reminds me of Body Worlds. You may have seen the exhibit of German scientist, Gunther von Hagen's "plastinated" humans. Here's a video. Learn your anatomy and be entirely creeped out! The best part is how they've posed the bodies. One cadaver plays chess while another is dribbling a basketball.
On a lighter note, Ebay has a wealth of old store stock Halloween decorations up for sale. Lots of Gurley candles, Beistle diecuts, and old crepe paper! I've linked some favorite sellers above or type "vintage halloween" in the search engine.

Dan Saelinger
Fellow SCAD graduate, Dan Saelinger has done extremely well with his commercial photography. His client list includes Lucky, Jane, Readymade, Popular Mechanics, and Field and Stream. Dan also makes available his fantastic range of art prints via several galleries which can be found online. His particular style of isolating well known objects in a modern way appeals to me. I love even his simplest composition, preferring the selection above-which can all be found on shopscadonline.com. Visit his website for more eye-candy. Dan is represented by Clare Agency.

Sold!
In celebration of the sale of my home in Savannah yesterday, I am revisiting my one-month of fame with images from the Better Homes and Garden article that featured my house last October. Thank you to my amazing realtor Liz Sestilli-Giddens of Keller-Williams Realty. She went above and beyond to help me sell this home! Thank you Liz! If you or anyone you know needs help selling a home in the Savannah area- see here.
Helen Phillips
Here's another exhibition postcard I've been carrying around with me for a few years. This sculpture by Arkansas artist, Helen Phillips was featured a few years ago in a show at the Design Center in Little Rock. I apologize I don't know the title of the piece. The tape I've used to hang it over the years has peeled it off! The good news is Helen is one half of a two artist show throughout the month of September at DDP Gallery in Fayetteville, Ar. Unfortunately there's only one image to view on the site-but I've found some others online here. Something about Helen's piece above has always engaged me. I think its equal parts her mixed use of materials and the knowledge that she creates many works based on her dreams. I think that is what makes her so original. I think Helen's work with the house figure was the first to resonate with me and it continues to appear in my own work. There is an excellent brief biography on Helen here. She has an abbreviated exhibition list here. If your out and about in the Ozarks be sure to see the show and support a great local gallery!
