Ice Storm hits my hometown...

As the power slowly returns to areas around Fayetteville, Arkansas, I've been seeing these heartbreaking photos come in from friends and family. Arkansas is usually blessed with fairly mild winters and short periods of sweltering heat...but once in a while, something like this hits and utterly devastates the landscape. It looks like a very dangerous situation with those limbs hanging, downed power lines, and treacherous roads. However, today it is forecast to be in the low 50's, so I imagine the scene is about to get even messier. My heart is with you all as you begin the work of digging out...xoxo

Ban.do

I'm head over heals for the colorful headpieces by the ladies of ban.do! I only found out about them this morning as they have won the Sweetest Things- Daily Candy's Best of Style for 2008. Each piece is an original handmade creation and they also carry a line for wedding and belts too! xo

When pals Jen Gotch (a prop stylist/photographer) and Jamie Coulter (a wardrobe stylist) discovered they had simultaneously made themselves festive headpieces for special events, they realized they had a business on their hands. And Ban.do was born. -Daily Candy

Assemblage Artist John Bell has been creating functional art objects for fifteen years. Each piece of sculpture is custom-crafted from found objects, architectural fragments and repurposed woods. The aesthetic is not so much one style as a mixing together of many different styles and feelings... an imaginative exploration of memory, primitivism and elegant ruin.

I'm getting ready for a long drive today down through Madison, Georgia and on down to Savannah. My friend and fellow SCAD graduate, Meryl Truett has herself traveled many miles documenting the Southern landscape through her camera lens. The results are equally graphic and nostalgic and have captivated countless collectors, including country music stars such as Roseanne Cash and Chet Atkins. (I love name-dropping whenever possible!) I adore Meryl as a person and an artist-she has the sweetest and most spirited soul and one of the best laughs! Until that fine day when we can purchase an original photo for our home, I'm content to own a copy of her book- a collection of photographs, Thump Queen and Other Southern Anomalies which can be purchased at shopSCAD. xo

Sweet Home Furnishings

I only found out a few days ago that one of my very favorite artists from Arkansas, John Bell has an incredible shop in Little Rock filled with vintage and antique found treasures! (Thanks a heap, my so-called friends and thank heavens for Facebook...my new best friend.) Not only does he peddle found furnishings...but local artwork as well...including his own! I'll be featuring this in a separate post coming very soon! He is probably the first art and found assemblage artist that I knew about and fell head over heals with about fifteen years ago. If you're in the Little Rock area, get thee there asap and know that I am extremely envious of your good fortune! Get to know more about John and his shop below and on Sweet Home's website. xo

Sweet Home furnishings is a shop in the Hillcrest neighborhood in Little Rock featuring handmade functional artwork, primitives, claywork, a selection of unusual notecards, antiques, new design, etc.,etc...I share the space with Clement., a wonderful shop full of curiosities and design filtered through the eye of owner Chris Clement. All should check out Chris' collection of vintage paintings and garden ware, among other things. I started Sweet Home eight years ago as a way to share the boxes and cabinets I assemble from old recycled wood, architectural fragments, finials and such. Since then it's become a gathering of all things that echo the blending of grand decay and simple austerity that I try to speak to in my work (with a dose of funky thrown in).
